Metaphors on Aging: On the Road

 Just in from SAQA:

"Metaphors on Aging" (after a wonderful reception in both the UK and South Africa) will be traveling to the International Quilt Festival in Chicago and to Quilt! Knit! Stitch in Portland, Oregon.  The Original Sewing and Quilting Expo is eagerly anticipating sharing it with their expected 92,000 visitors when it tours their 11 venues beginning in September.  

Here's a little about the history of this piece:

Wnen my dad died in 2011, I spent about 6 months working on a series of quilts, initiated by work in an on-line course on "Working in a Series" taught by artist Lisa Call.

This one came in 2013, when I developed a large stencil based on one of the previous art quilts, in response to the exhibit call for SAQA's project.

I ironed the freezer paper stencil onto a large piece of recycled damask table cloth, then screen-printed the mermaid image using a combination of tempera paint and acrylic paint because I could not get the intense blue matt color I was looking for with acrylic alone. (Who knows if it will fade? So far, not) The image of my Sirena, an alter ego for myself, is filled with milagros (miracle charms) that refer to the gifts that my father gave me in life -- love of work with hands, words, fishing lines, star-gazing, geology...

The border fabric is an over dyed piece of vintage curtain brocade, so the entire piece is on "aged" fabric! I added the prayer flag as a note to the  role prayer and faith play as we age, and the eagle embroideries were cut from a damaged piece of Oaxacan embroidery -- a nod to the bravery we must have as we age.

The work was fused, then machine free-motion quilted, then filled with hand-stitch.

Dinner@8 Exhibit in Quilting Arts

We are thrilled to announce that the "Rituals" exhibit is prominently featured in the October/November 2012 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.  Judy Coates Perez's work graces the cover which is a win-win for both Judy and d@8!  As a prequel to the article there is a Q&A with both of us about the history of d@8 and images of our Rituals quilts.  Between these two articles there are a total of 11 art quilts from our exhibit!

The quilts in the article were hand selected by Vivika DeNegre, using the Art Call site (where you submitted your entries).  We both agree that this coverage is yet another indication that we have a knock-out exhibit.  We are very grateful for the generous coverage of our exhibit in Quilting Arts!  Congratulations to all of you and the amazing work you created for "Rituals," and to the artists whose work is featured in this issue:  Judy Coates Perez, Susan Brubaker Knapp, Jeannie Palmer Moore, Susie Monday, Loris Bogue, Barb Forrister, Gerrie Congdon, Karen Rips, and Virginia Spiegel.  It has been such an honor to be recipients of QA's generosity for three years in a row.

"Copper Shade Tree Expansion" We finally made it happen. After discussions about a new expansion, Copper Shade Tree has just about doubled in size. We were given the opportunity to acquire additional space in The Stone Cellar, and we took their offer. The front room of The Stone Cellar was the wine room. They moved the wine to the cellar and it looks fantastic.  The Art in Fiber 2011 show was the premier opening in the new room. Make plans for a visit to Round Top and stop by to see the new look.

Southwest School Opening

 

The All-School Show opened last Thursday at the Southwest School of Art and Craft. Lots of beautiful work, and as usual, displayed with elegance and professionalism. I'm honored to have my piece "Mas" included -- it's an 18" square fabric paper stitched piece. 

The second work I submitted didn't get into the exhibit but was selected to hang in the school's dining room gallery, The Copper Kitchen. (It's just there behind the cashier's desk.)

Adjunct faculty member Paula Gron showed these striking and original woven forms.

Diana Kersey, whose jars here were some of my favorite pieces in the exhibit, was honored as the Teacher of the Year.

All who have attended classes (or taught) at SWS during a year are invited to enter this juried annual exhibition. There are always lots of amazing pieces that don't make it into the show, so we're all pleased to be hanging this year! The exhibit is open through mid September, so hope you can stop by if you are in the area. (P.S. Both of my pieces are for sale, let me know if you are interested!.)

Spine Cross, One of ten pieces now added to The Twig's exhibit of my work. Each of these little gems is $80 for an 8" by 8" original, one-of-a-kind textile painting, mounted on a wooden frame and ready to hang.
